What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury?
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a sudden force causes damage to the brain. During car crashes, the brain is violently jostled inside the skull due to rapid deceleration. Head traumas can also occur when the head strikes a hard object such as the steering wheel, dashboard, or pavement.
Types of Head Trauma
- Closed Head Injuries — The brain is damaged by force, but nothing penetrates the skull. Most TBIs are closed injuries.
- Open (Penetrating) Head Injuries — An object penetrates the skull and damages brain tissue.
- Concussions — A milder form of TBI, but repeated concussions can cause permanent damage.
Symptoms
Symptoms may appear immediately or be delayed by hours or days:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of consciousness
- Unequal pupil sizes
- Confusion, memory loss, difficulty concentrating
- Abnormal behavior, mood changes
- Seizures
- Persistent headaches
